Digital security is a matter and responsibility of those who run an online business. If this sounds to be true, does it mean that you already install the digital certificate? A digital certificate or SSL Certificate is used to secure data transmitted between a browser of users and your web server. With many products available on the market, you can choose the best quality SSL Certificate Indonesia which is issued by one of the trusted Certificate Authorities in the world.

Background of SAN Certificate

If you use a standard certificate, you secure only one domain. Those who use more than one domain when running a business over the internet love to benefit from the presence of a Multi-Domain Certificate. This type of certificate is also known as SAN (Subject Alternative Name) Certificate namely a certificate that can secure multiple domains with one certificate. SAN Certificates have gained traction following the release of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 which uses SAN to simplify server configuration. Somehow, we should also know that the extension of SAN has been around since before 1999 as part of the X-509 certificate standard.

X.509 specifications organize the internet x.509 PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) Certificate which also includes the format of SSL Certificates. Originally SSL Certificate only enabled the designation of a single hostname in the certificate namely Common name. The common name indicates the hostname that SSL Certificate covers. Security error or hostname mismatch error is the result of using the certificate for a website that doesn’t match the common name. X.509 specification enables users to attach an extension to Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and final server certificate.

What Subject Alternative Names Do

  • Implementing SSL on Exchange Server 2007 and 2013 can simplify SSL configuration. For your information, SAN Certificates use one IP address which then results in one certificate for one IP address. It then reduces the time and frustration involved in managing multiple certificates which each bound to a unique IP address and running numerous low-level PowerShell commands to get it all working.
  • SANs allow a number of domains specified to get protected by a single certificate. aside from that, it also secures hostnames with differing domain name extensions in one SSL Certificate. SAN Certificate can secure both www and non-www domains.
  • SAN hosts multiple SSL sites on a single IP address. This is ideal for virtual hosting or cloud hosting where 1 IP Address is allocated per server, Amazon AWS for instance. Traditionally, hosting multiple SSL-enabled sites on a single server requires a unique IP address of each site. Fortunately, SAN or UCC (Unified Communications Certificate) solves that limitation. Microsoft IIS and Apache have the capability of virtual hosting HTTPS sites using the SAN certificate.

Using SAN Certificate Saves You Money

Wonder how SAN Certificate Installation saving you money? As said, the SAN certificate can help secure multiple domains with only one certificate. You can simplify certificate management, so you can save time and effort. The best thing is that you can save money because you should not secure each domain with each certificate. Whenever you aim to secure multiple domains with SSL Certificate installation, you can consider GeoTrust QuickSSL Premium Multi-Domain (SAN) Certificate or Sectigo Unified Communication Certificate (UCC) OV which is issued by different Certificate Authority and has each unique features. However, you can also choose the SAN Certificate product provided by other CAs.
